  14.         <text><span class="style42"></span><span class="style12">BAHAMAS</span><span class="style14"></span><span class="style42">Official name: </span><span class="style13">The Commonwealth of the Bahamas</span><span class="style42">Member of: </span><span class="style13">UN, Commonwealth, OAS, CARICOM</span><span class="style42">Area: </span><span class="style13">13939 km2  (5382 sq mi)</span><span class="style42">Population:</span><span class="style13"> 266000 (1993 est)</span><span class="style42">Capital: </span><span class="style13">Nassau 169000 (1990 census)</span><span class="style42">Language: </span><span class="style13">English (official)</span><span class="style42">Religions: </span><span class="style13">Baptist (29%), Roman Catholic (26%)</span><span class="style42">GOVERNMENT</span><span class="style13">The Senate (the upper house of Parliament) has 16 appointed members. The House of Assembly (the lower house) has 49 members elected by universal adult suffrage for five years. A Prime Minister, who commands a majority in the House, is appointed by the Governor General, who is the representative of the British Queen as sovereign of the Bahamas. The Prime Minister chairs the Cabinet, which is responsible to the House.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">The Bahamas comprises some 700 long, flat, narrow islands, and over 2000 barren rocky islets. </span><span class="style42">Climate:</span><span class="style13"> The climate is mild and subtropical, with no great seasonal variation in temperature. Rainfall averages just over 1000 mm (40 in). The islands are liable to hurricanes.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">Tourism ΓÇô mainly from the USA ΓÇô is the major source of income, and, with related industries, it employs the majority of the labor force. The islands have become a tax haven and financial center. </span><span class="style42">Currency: </span><span class="style13">Bahamian dollar.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">Columbus landed in the Bahamas when he reached the New World (1492). In the 17th century, English colonists attempted to settle, but development was slow. After the American Revolution, an influx of Loyalists and their slaves established cotton plantations, but the abolition of slavery (1834) ended this activity. Although the first representative assembly met in 1729, internal self-government was not achieved until 1964. Independence was granted in 1973.</span></text>
